Bobby Massie Cancels UGA Visit

Fri, 30th January, 2009 - Posted by - (5) Comment  |

Bobbie Massey, a five-star 6-foot-8 335 lb offensive tackle from Hargrave Military Academy, has cancelled his visit to UGA scheduled for this weekend.

Kit Kitchens lets us know why Massie was less of a want and more of a need:

The news does not bode well for UGA as signing Massie would have really bolstered an already solid class of offensive linemen. After last season’s injuries, UGA has pursued a long list of offensive tackles to help with depth in case starting tackles Trinton Sturdivant and Vince Vance do not return completely healthy from their ACL tears.

This is more bad news for Georgia’s late stage recruiting efforts. Though this class may yet prove to be strong, it has taken a beating this past week.

Starting with Cameron Kenney, a Dacula native, committing to Oklahoma and continuing with the news that Toby Jackson had failed to qualify for this year’s class.

That news was followed up with Stephen Hill, a Lithonia WR, solidifying his commitment to Georgia Tech after a late pitch from Georgia.

So, who’s left? Jarvis Jones, Marlon Brown and Greg Reid. Jones and Brown are bona-fide long shots, and Reid is looking like a coin toss.

It is looking like we may pull an 0-fer and crawl across the finish line.

Georgia Pursues Current Tennessee WR Commitment

Thu, 29th January, 2009 - Posted by - Comments Off  |

The AJC is reporting that new WR coach Tony Ball is trying to arrange a last minute visit with Tennessee WR commitment Je’Ron Stokes.

UGA, after being jilted by two prospects at wide receiver within a 48-hour span, may have found another candidate at the position: Philadelphia’s Je’Ron Stokes, who is committed to Tennessee.

Stokes has been shopping around a little since the coaching change occurred at Tennessee. He sounds very interested in Georgia:

He said Bobo requested senior film last week and that he had been anxious to hear back from the Bulldogs. “I’ve always liked Georgia because they’re a good school, a powerhouse in the SEC. They’ve got so much talent coming in, and already there.”

Who says there isn’t anymore drama in Georgia recruiting?

Recruiting Wishlist

Tue, 27th January, 2009 - Posted by - (4) Comment  |

Bulldawg Illustrated names their top 5 recruiting targets they want to see go Georgia’s way on signing day. It’s topped by everyone’s favorite Florida decommit, Lowndes County DB Greg Reid:

1. Greg Reid 5’9” 175 Originally, I had Bobby Massie at the top spot, but I simply can’t stand when top talent escapes the state of Georgia. Reid had initially committed to Flordia, but the Lowndes native decided to reconsider and has the Dawgs at the top of his list. He is a small corner, but displays a similar tenacity to Prince Miller and has even better instincts to go along with impressive ball skills. Our secondary failed to come up with as many INTs as it should have this past season. Reid could contribute to that number immediately, especially since Allen opted to enter the NFL draft.

Hey, who doesn’t like a guy who tells Urban Meyer “thanks, but no thanks”, but I’m putting either WR Marlon Brown or LB/DE Jarvis Jones at the top of my list.

Yesterday’s loss of WR Cameron Kenney and DE Toby Jackson leaves a serious gap that Jones and Brown would fill nicely.

Getting Brown, Jones and one other from the list would enable Georgia to finish the recruiting season strong reverse this sudden lapse in momentum.

Reid: Florida State, Georgia, Alabama, Miami… All Even

Mon, 26th January, 2009 - Posted by - Comments Off  |

Greg Reid got the hard sell at ‘Bama this weekend. Apparently it worked:

Nick Saban and staff have been looking for a player like Reid to add to their secondary haul this recruiting cycle and by getting him on the official visit (there was talk he would not make it to Tuscaloosa last weekend), they wedged themselves squarely in the mix.

“I don’t have any favorites right now,” Reid told ESPN affiliate TotalUGA.com following his trip to Tuscaloosa. “Florida State, Georgia, Alabama and now Miami are all even.”

I think it still looks good for Georgia though considering he is done with all other official visits except for Georgia.

Urban Meyer Ticked Off At Greg Reid

Wed, 21st January, 2009 - Posted by - (1) Comment  |

UPDATE: Greg Reid is no longer considering the Gators.

Via Dawgrun.

Urban Meyer wasn’t happy with Greg Reid’s decision to shop around.

“Coach Meyer was pretty upset,” Reid said. “He asked ‘Where were all these other schools before the Under Armour game? Did they even know who Greg Reid was as a sophomore and junior like we [Florida] did?’ [Meyer] spoke in a very powerful [tone].”

Looks like Urban is feeling pretty heady post-BCS, ratcheting up the pressure on Greg Reid after his stock has shot through the roof after the Under Armour game.

FWIW, it’s not looking too good for Florida:

“While Reid stated he has no favorites, he clearly favors Florida State over Florida. “I felt like I was at home at Florida State on my [official] visit, it was totally different from the feeling I got [during my recruiting trip] at Florida.”

I think Florida is out of it. What do I know though? He might just be wanting to manufacture some doubt to make his decision to become a Gator that much more dramatic.

I think the odds are he’ll be a Georgia Bulldog recruit. It will all come down to the ridiculous hat-laden press conference on signing day.

Three Georgia High School Players Selected To Parade All-American Team

Wed, 21st January, 2009 - Posted by - Comments Off  |

Three Georgia high school football players have been selected to the 2009 Parade All-American team.

Greg Reid of Lowndes, Branden Smith of Washington and Washaun Ealey of ECI are Parade All-Americans.

The three Georgia players will be among the 58 announced to the All-American team in Parade’s Jan. 25 issue, which is a Sunday supplement in the Journal-Constitution.

Two out of three are UGA commits, with Reid looking like a lean at this point. Getting all three would be great to symbolically reaffirm Richt’s stranglehold on the state’s best football talent.

Georgia QB commit Aaron Murray is also a 2009 Parade All-American.

Georgia Lands Another “Commitment”

Mon, 19th January, 2009 - Posted by - Comments Off  |

Georgia has received the latest commitment in it’s 2009 recruiting class from Reuben Fahlougi, a DE from Evans, GA.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Faloughi says he will join UGA as a “preferred walk-on,” turning down offers from smaller colleges. He is considered one of the state’s most underrated prospects.

“It has always been my dream to play for Georgia, and we worked it out
where it could happen … I’m excited,” Faloughi said.

While the first paragraph may not seem so impressive the second paragraph more than makes up for it. It’s going to be great to have a kid in the locker room that turned down other scholarship offers just so he could have a chance to play for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Welcome aboard, Reuben Fahlougi!

The top basketball prospect in Georgia and the top center prospect nationally will announce his decision tomorrow night.

South Atlanta center Derrick Favors, the No. 1 basketball recruit in Georgia, will announce is college decision Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., according to his high school coach, Michael Reddick.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Just really down on UGA hoops at the moment.

Montez Robinson Will Be A Georgia Bulldog

Tue, 13th January, 2009 - Posted by - Comments Off  |

Georgia reached out to Avon, Indiana and got a commitment DE from Montez Robinson, formerly an Auburn commitment.

Robinson is an explosive playmaker who has a big frame to grow into. He is quite athletic and quick for a 6’5″ player. He may not be an instant contributor for UGA, but given time and proper coaching, he could be a lineman similar to Quentin Moses in that both possessed great rush speed and burst off the snap.

Robinson was originally committed to Auburn, but rescinded his commitment after Auburn and then coach Tommy Tuberville parted ways. He chose the Dawgs over offers from other schools including Alabama, Illinois, Louisville and Purdue, among others.

Who said firing Tommy Tubberville was a bad idea?
