Jeff Owens gets into the Mount Rushmore thing by naming his Top 5 Favorite Dawgs of all-time. It’s pretty interesting because he selects two all-time greats in Herschel and Champ, but the other three are guys that he’s played with.

Check it out. I loved reading about his second-favorite dawg, Knowshon Moreno.

I’m not being biased just because I played three years with him, but he is the best running back I have ever played with. In 2005 when he came to the UGA camp, he was the best back at the camp. I did not know he would make an impact like the way he did, but he was a beast the first day he put pads on! In 2006 fall camp

Man, reading that makes you want to hop in a time machine and convince Coach Richt to throw Knowshon into the mix as a true freshmen. May have not put the Dogs in the mix for a championship but could have at least enabled them to get to ten wins. Ah well, hindsight and all.

This is good stuff on Greg Blue.

To me, the fifth greatest player is Greg Blue. I got the opportunity to play with Greg Blue my freshman year. I saw him run through people. In practice, the coach would not let him tackle because they feared he would hurt someone.

Yeah, Greg Blue had his flaws but I sure do miss that fear factor he brought when he walked out onto the field. It was awesome and is sorely missed.

Jeff’s also been busy talking to ESPN.com’s SEC blogger Chris Low and publishing a new player Q & A with Trinton Sturdivant.

UGAVJeff Owens has been typing away on his tiny iPhone keyboard. He gives love to the unsung athletic trainers who work diligently behind the scenes and has published a fresh player Q&A wth Tony Wilson.

A great tale of sportsmanship from a high school basketball game.

Seems like there is a growing number of folks in the media thinking that this Kiffin kid may actually be smarter than we all think. Pfffft….

AthlonSports profiles Georgia’s 2009 recruiting class. They ranked it 8th, 3rd best in the SEC.

The coaches pick the Diamond Dogs to unleash the power of their new Easton bats (scroll down, permalink is broken) and win the Eastern Division.

Jeff Dantzler has some great perspective on the upcoming football season over at Bulldawg Illustrated’s Dawg Blog.

It looks like it will be just one more day before Kwame Geathers makes his decision between Georgia, Tennessee and Central Florida.

Mark Richt has a blog. Subscribe!

Speaking of Coach Richt… he’s promised M.L. King RB Mack Brown the number 33 and called him a “helluva back“.

LB Darryl Gamble says there is a new culture taking hold in locker room this year.

LOST continues to bring “teh awesomez“.

Jeff Owens Plays For “The G”

Sun, 8th February, 2009 - Posted by - Comments Off  |

Jeff OwensGreat blog post by none other than Jeff Owens on his own blog, “Jeff Owens: The Real Deal…” about the pride he takes in wearing the G and representing the University and the state of Georgia.

The first time I heard the phrase “playing for the G”, I was in freshman orientation for the signing class of 2005. We sat in a room for seven hours going over what would be expected of us as freshmen student-athletes. Chester Adams, one of the upper classmen, spoke about wearing the “G”. At first I did not understand what it meant; I did not know that I was not just playing for myself but for all the men that have ever worn the “G”. I tell the guys everyday that what we do here reflects on the whole program. Georgia football is bigger than any one player on the team. I asked some of my teams this same question, “what does it mean to wear the ‘G’?” Rod Battle said “playing for the ‘G’ is like competing for the United States in the Olympics. It’s my home state, a place where I’ll be forever connected to. Plus I have all the extended family members I have grown to love here”.

There are a couple of things I take from this blog post:

1. It underscores what a tremendous loss Owens was to the defense last year. In all the rumblings of a lack a leadership on the team, Jeff left a leadership void too large to fill. Reminiscent of losing Boss Bailey on the opening kick-off against… Georgia Southern to begin the ill-fated 2000 campaign.

2. It makes me that much more enthusiastic about the 2009 campaign with a leader like Owens returning to the the fold on the defense and a firebrand like Joe Cox taking the reigns of the offense.
