The Diamond Dogs remained white hot defeating Quinnipiac 7-2 at Foley Field on an ideal afternoon in Athens, GA.

While the run total wasn’t as high as in previous games the bullpen showed up to make sure the seven runs was enough to get the job done.

With the win the Diamond Dogs continue to extend their record setting season opening win streak while also closing in on the longest winning streak of the Perno era, 13. Just one more victory will tie that record.

The Georgia bullpen threw 5.2 scoreless innings and allowed just two hits as the Bulldogs completed a sweep of Quinnipiac with a 7-2 win Sunday at Foley Field.

Georgia, ranked as high as No. 2 by Collegiate Baseball, improved to 12-0 and is one game shy of tying the longest winning streak in the David Perno era.

The Diamond Dogs will have the opportunity to tie the longest streak of the Perno era on Tuesday when they host LeMoyne at Foley Field in Athens.

After that the Bulldogs will be off to Alabama for the start of the SEC schedule.

Diamond Dogs Make History

The Georgia Baseball Diamond Dogs make history

The Georgia Diamond Dogs continued their tear through the 2009 baseball schedule and made a little history on the way. The Dogs defeated Quinnipiac 10-0 at Foley Field Friday night for their tenth straight win to start the season, a new school record.

Senior pitcher Trevor Holder delivered another dominating performance.

Trevor Holder held Quinnipiac hitless and recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings to lead Georgia to a 7-0 win over Quinnipiac Friday at Foley Field. With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 10-0, the best start in school history, surpassing the 9-0 start by the 1911 team.

Holder allowed just three base runners, all on walks, and picked up his third win of the season. Dean Weaver pitched the final two innings, and the Bobcats (0-4) didn’t record a base hit until Ben Farina’s single with one out in the ninth. They added another two batters later and finished the game with just two hits.

The pitching wasn’t the only thing that was working for the #2 ranked Diamond Dogs. The freshmen bats were giving the opposing pitching all sorts of headaches.

Colby May went 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead Georgia offensively. The freshman from Guyton, Ga., was a triple shy of the cycle.

Another freshman, Johnathan Taylor added two hits and scored three runs. He had three stolen bases, just one shy of the school record set by Rodney Bellamy against Westminster in 1980.

What a great night for the Diamond Dogs and what a great day for the entire Bulldog Nation. Why can’t they all be like this?

Diamond Dogs Tie Best Start Ever

Georgia defeated Wofford 13-6 at Foley Field tonight to tie the best start in school history. The Dogs will have a chance to set the record this weekend vs. Quinnipac.

How are they doing it?

“Offensively you just can’t say enough about our guys,” Perno said. “We’re playing a lot of guys and they are all coming up big for us. The depth we have really allows us to stay fresh and sharp.”

The bats are hot and everyone is getting in on it. Will they slow down? I hope Georgia is able to follow through on this early success and go deep in the post-season.

The hopes for the success of the 2009 Diamond Dogs has officially gone through the roof. They sure did get the attention of Arizona.

Georgia Trounce Cats For Sweep

Sun, 1st March, 2009 - Posted by - (2) Comment  |

The bats stayed hot for the Diamond Dogs out in balmy Tuscon, Arizona helping Georgia deliver an impressive sweep in the three game series.

Georgia outscored Arizona 33-14 in the three games and out hit the Wildcats 49-25. The Bulldogs scored double-digits in each game of the three-game road series for just the second time ever and the first time since 1982.

The Diamond Dogs are now 8-0, one victory away from matching the best start in school history. How far back was that? How about pre-WWI era Georgia Baseball… 1911.

The Diamond Dogs will get their shot at that bit of history on Wednesday night against Wofford. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Diamond Dogs Drop Wildcats 11-5

Georgia Diamond Dogs Baseball

The Georgia Diamond Dogs ventured out west and used their bats to mete out a little punishment on the Arizona Wildcats. They defeated Arizona 11-5 Friday night.

When it came to scoring runs, lots of Bulldogs joined the party.

Nine different players had at least one hit for Georgia (6-0) including Johnathan Taylor, Rich Poythress, Bryce Massanari and Lyle Allen with two apiece. Poythress drove in three runs and Fuller and Allen had two RBI each.

Coach Perno was thoroughly pleased with the team effort.

“It was a great effort tonight all around,” said head coach David Perno. “We threw a bunch of strikes and Trevor was really good. We got off to a great start, ran their starter out of the game and got to their bullpen. (Will) Harvil was tremendous for us and (Justin) Earls got a big out for us. We did a tremendous job and I’m very proud of our team tonight. We did a good job of answering everything they had.”

Game 2 of the 3 game series will begin tonight at 8 p.m. ET.

Diamond Dogs Push Record To 5-0

UGA Diamond Dogs Baseball News

The Diamond Dogs defeated Presbyterian 11-4 today at Foley Field to push their record to 5-0 before their trip out west to face the Arizona Wildcats in a three game series.

Even though it was a win Coach Perno found plenty of room for the team to improve.

“I thought it was a good game, but we made some really bad decisions in the middle innings,” said head coach David Perno. “The guys in the pen did a really good job. Some guys were having an off night, but we had some players lower in the lineup who were picking them up.”

Hopefully the Dogs got the mistakes out of their system as they’ll need their best effort to take the series with Arizona.

The Diamond Dogs relied on excellent platoon pitching to win their fourth game straight by defeating the Blue Hose of Presbyterian at Foley Field in Athens.

“Pitching was the key,” said Georgia head coach David Perno. “Tanner threw the ball well, and kept it down. He did a great job funneling the ball through the strike zone.”

While the pitching was dominant the bats weren’t exactly dormant.

Freshman Zach Cone went 3-for-5 with a triple and an RBI to lead the Bulldogs (4-0), and Colby May and Rich Poythress each homered.

The Dogs will face off against Presbyterian again tomorrow afternoon at Foley Field. First pitch is at 4:00 p.m.

The Diamond Dogs dominated Youngstown St. for the second day in a row going home with a 14-0 shutout.

Junior Alex Mcree delivered 5 2/3 scoreless innings and once again the freshmen bats of Jonathan Taylor and Chase Davidson were on fire.

Freshmen Johnathan Taylor and Chase Davidson led the Bulldogs with three hits apiece. Taylor is now 5-for-7 with four RBI through two games.

“Johnathan is really pushing for conference player of the week and really national player of the week,” Perno said. “The things he has done the last couple of days are unreal, especially as a freshman. He’s playing great out there.”

Smooth sailing for the Diamond Dogs so far. They’ll have an opportunity to go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Foley Field.

The Diamond Dogs Dominate

UGA Diamond Dogs Roll To Victory
Image:Tricia Spalding/Athens Banner-Herald

Georgia took out the paddle on Youngstown State at Foley Field this afternoon. The freshman bats came alive and Trevor Holder held ‘em to just 2 runs.

Senior ace Trevor Holder dominated and the five freshmen in Georgia’s starting lineup provided much of the offensive firepower as the Bulldogs opened their season with a 15-2 win over Youngstown State on Friday at Foley Field.

The freshmen weren’t the only ones lighting it up. Some familiar faces stepped up to the plate and helped show the new kids how it is done, son.

In all, the freshmen were responsible for eight of Georgia’s 17 hits and scored eight of the Bulldogs’ runs. But they weren’t the only source of offense, as senior catcher Bryce Massanari was 3-for-4 with three runs and juniors Michael Demperio and Poythress each went 2-for-5 and scored once.

Coach Perno is just giddy:

“It’s fun on so many levels,” Georgia coach David Perno said. “You’re sitting here and when they took the field, I looked out there and I was like, ‘Good night!’ For three years you’ll see Zach Cone, Chase Davidson, JT, Levi Hyams, Colby May. That’s pretty special.”

The Diamond Dogs have gotten off to a great start. I’m sure they’re determined to put this odd year bad, even year good business behind them and they did so with a vengeance. I think we may be seeing the formation of a College Baseball powerhouse.

The future of Georgia Baseball is getting brighter everyday.
