The Road To G-Day Begins

Unless you’ve been comatose you’re aware that the Georgia Bulldogs began their spring practice yesterday. The spring session will culminate in the G-Day game on April 11 at 1:00pm. Admission is free this year to get a big crowd in for the live ESPN HD broadcast. If the weather is anything like it was today, look for the biggest G-Day crowd ever.

Spring gives us junkies something to talk about until the fall gets here and gives the coaches a look at what they have so things can be a little more sorted out by the time fall rolls around.

Today was better than yesterday according to Coach Richt.

“We had an outstanding practice today,” Richt said. “There were some things from (Tuesday) that we talked about in the coaches meetings and to the team and I think we corrected all of them for the most part. The defense was leading us with their effort and enthusiasm and as a whole, I though we got better today.”

The top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, Matthew Stafford, was has been in attendance to show support for his former teammates. Stafford is in town for the UGA Pro-Day tomorrow.

“It was weird seeing Matthew in the stands,” head coach Mark Richt said. “It was weird seeing Dannell Ellerbe just watching. It was weird for him and weird for us, too. But that’s just college football. You know after a certain amount of time, guys are gone and other guys have to rise to the occasion.”

The above quote is from David Hale’s epic recap of the first day of practice. David Hale has also joined the twittersphere! Follow David Hale’s updates @bulldogsblog.

One of the more interesting things to follow this spring may be how Caleb handles being “the man”. He enters this spring hearing crickets at the top of the depth chart. Will he take his game to the next level or will he start hearing the young footsteps of Carlton Thomas?

The other area of intrigue will be seeing what kind of challenge Logan Gray will mount for the top spot on the QB depth chart. Conventional wisdom says Cox it is just Cox’s time but I think we’ll all know after the G-Day game if Gray is a threat to overtake Cox during the season or simple a “change of pace” guy.

What are you looking out for? One last thing I might add is which freshman QB gets PT this year and which one gets redshirted? The G-Day game may give us an early indication.

Is it April 11 yet?

I know it’s been regurgitated on about every “5 things to watch for in the spring” list but I’m watching the DE’s. Due to injuries we won’t get a definite answer but I just want to see some explosion off the ball. I’m also curios to see how Tavarres King and Isreal Toupe look. Lastly I’m going to be watching the secondary as a whole. I’m hearing some good talk about Boykin and Cummings so I’m going to try and keep an eye on them.

I hope the weather is good this year. The last two years the weather has been miserable.
