In what is definitely a surprise to me, Orson Charles has dropped Florida from the list of schools he is considering. It is now down to UGA, Tennessee and USC.
“I appreciate Florida’s interest. I think very highly of Coach Meyer and the Gators,” wrote Charles, a 6-foot-3 prospect from Tampa-Plant. “This was a tough decision for my family. Please understand me and my family’s call. Thank you and God bless.”
Now that we know his final three I really like Georgia’s chances. Florida was the team that I felt like might get him in the end because it was close, and the home state school.
Charles will make his final decision on March 6, but all signs point to him signing with Georgia. His high school quarterback, Aaron Murray, already signed with the Dawgs, and Charles favorite jersey number 7 came open this year with Matthew Stafford heading to the NFL.
He seems like the kind of kid that wouldn’t go for Kiffin’s recruiting voodoo and then it would boil down to Georgia and USC. So, do you want to commit to playing four years at a place you’ve only visited once?
I got a good feeling about Orson Charles. We’ll all know on March 6th.

Color me surprised. I’ve had this nagging feeling he was going to UF. It sounded to me like he favored their use of the TE over ours even though I read Bobo told him he would split him out some. Nonetheless this is damn good news. He would be a very nice cherry on top of the already stellar recruiting class.
I really don’t understand the national draw of USC. Year after year they ONLY sign 4 and 5 star guys. So besides being on the opposite side of the country (which for 90% of guys is a big deal), a guy like Charles would be stuck behind 4 and 5 star guys just like him. Whereas if you commit to an SEC team you have the ability to contribute your first year if there is a position battle or in a majority of cases at most two years.
@dean I agree that my biggest fear was him signing with Florida. While anything can happen I feel like from what we’ve read about Orson he’s a really smart guy and it seems like the most practical choice left is Georgia.
@Ryan I think it’s the national media orgy over USC every year. People calling them unbeatable, saying they could compete in the NFL, etc… When a kid gets an offer it’s like “I have to go here, they’re so much better than everyone else.”
Jut my theory anyway. Plus, I suppose there is the tabloid/Hollywood factor. If you’re great at USC you might just become a celebrity at the same time. I mean, you didn’t see Oregon reaching out snagging guys when they were at the height of their run in the late 90′s.
